About TURQUOISE COAST

From Bodrum and Marmaris, along the coast to Dalyan, the ruins show ancient tombs cut into the rock at Kaunos. These belonged to the Lycian people who had extended their control along the Mediterranean Coast and participated in the battles of Troy, according to Homer’s Illiad. Fethiye is a natural harbour with scuba diving facilities. Similarly Pinara, some 50km away, shows the real splendour of the Lycian rock tombs. These gems of history are strewn all over this coastline. Onwards from there, to Kalkan and Kas, comes a fertile river-delta which was the Roman city of Myra. It was important enough in its day to have its own Bishop, one of them being St. Nicholas, well known as a certain Santa Claus! Rich in history, the Turquoise Coast is breathtaking with its clear waters and miles of beaches. This coast is a heady mixture of culture and beauty.

  • For men, have a Turkish Shave! Best to do this in the evening, due to the exfoliation of the skin you will need to leave it over night before applying any suntan lotion as this can clog pores.
  • You will find that you will get a better rate of exchange on your lira changing your money in resort, plus they don’t charge any commission!!
  • If visiting Mosque’s in Turkey, women will have to wear a head scarf and cover shoulders and ankles, men will do the same however they do not need to wear a head scarf.
  • Sunset at one of the beach café’s on the Belcegiz Beach in Oludeniz is magical. Large comfortable bean bags chill out music and tea-lights candles.
  • When catching the local dolmus (mini bus) service to Oludeniz don’t get off at the main stop with everyone else ask the driver to take you to one of the private beaches in the Blue Lagoon for a more private sunbathing experience.
  • Remember when on the main Belcegiz Beach in Oludeniz you will be charged for hiring sunbed’s and parasols.
  • Butterfly Valley! Catch the Water Taxi from the main beach for a 30 min crossing to your own paradise for the day, or stay the night in readymade huts and tents available to rent.
  • The famous Fethiye Fish market is a must, there you can haggle and pick you freshly caught fish with local fishermen. Ask a local restaurant to cook your ‘catch of the day’.
  • Visit Fethiye Castle on the south side of town, on the eastern facing hill. You will see two rock tombs belonging to the knights of St John. There is a charge to enter the Tombs.
  • In 1993 an excavation of the town discovered an old Amphitheatre from when Fethiye was known as Telemessos it is free to walk around and is just to the right of the main harbour.
  • From the harbour in Fethiye jump on the water taxi to nearby resort of Calis; 30 min crossing (approx. 5 lira) travel with your back to Calis and watch Fethiye unfold before your eyes.
  • Looking for a quiet beach? Try Kaputas Beach, an un-spoilt cove off the main road to Kalkan.
  • Aubergine restaurant in Kalkan is a must one afternoon for a late lunch, sit and relax with a wonderful seafood and fish menu its lovely to dine overlooking the harbour.
