About FAMAGUSTA

On the eastern shores of northern Cyprus, the town of Famagusta, with its naturally deep harbour, holds a strategic location as well as many reminders of the empires that settled in this remarkable area. It is said to have been founded by the Egyptians in 260 BC, which marked the beginning of what was to be the commercial centre of the eastern Mediterranean and the home of many Christian orders. The Venetians and the Ottomans also ruled here and helped to create the mystique you feel, as you gaze at the magnificent walls which surround the town. The old sector bazaars offer a selection of traditional handicrafts as well as countless cafes, restaurants and bars. Famugusta is rightly famous for having some of the most beautiful beaches on the island and the current divide between north and south leaves a section that has become one of the only ghost towns in existence.
